Intermediate and station arresters protect medium and high-voltage electrical systems by diverting voltage surges from lightning strikes, switching operations, or equipment malfunctions to ground. Station arresters handle heavy-duty applications with higher energy absorption (up to 6.1 kJ\/kV), lower discharge voltages, and fault withstand capacity of 80 kA rms symmetrical, making them suitable for large substations. Intermediate arresters provide moderate protection (up to 5.0 kJ\/kV energy capability and 50 kA fault withstand) for small substations, underground cable networks, and dry-type transformers.<\/p>\n

These arresters use metal oxide valve elements, primarily zinc oxide discs, enclosed in polymer or porcelain housings with fiberglass-reinforced epoxy and silicone rubber seals. The zinc oxide discs exhibit high impedance under normal voltages, allowing minimal leakage current. During surges, resistance drops rapidly to conduct excess current to ground, then returns to high-impedance state for continuous operation.<\/p>\n

Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage (MCOV) ranges from 2.55 kV to 158 kV for station types and 2.55 kV to 115 kV for intermediate types. Duty cycle ratings span 3 kV to 198 kV for station and 3 kV to 144 kV for intermediate arresters. Designs comply with Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Std C62.11 and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 60099-4 standards, with hollow core configurations for directional venting and increased creepage distance for polluted environments.<\/p>\n

Applications include generation, transmission, and distribution substations, Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC) traction systems, High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) networks, and series capacitor banks. Selection requires matching MCOV to system line-to-ground voltages and grounding practices per IEEE C62.22, with system fault levels exceeding 20 kA typically necessitating intermediate or station class protection.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>
